TRANSFER CASE FLUID
The transfer case is an integral part of any 4-wheel or all-wheel drive system. It transfers power to both the front and rear differential assemblies, which causes your wheels to turn. This gearbox divides the transmission power output between the rear differential and the front differential. The transfer case also enables you to switch between gears, such as 4High and 4Low.
Like engine oil, transfer case fluid reduces heat and provides lubrication to gears, bearings, shafts, and other internal components. Heat, pressure and friction eventually this fluid will break down and if not changed at the appropriate interval it will lead to excessive wear on bearings and gears. In addition, small particles of metal may come off the gears as they wear; these metal particles can mix with the fluid.
When should the transfer case fluid be changed? The interval for transfer case service varies from one manufacturer to another. A good rule of thumb is everything 30,000 miles, but you should consult your owner’s manual for more exact information.
